Marriage ROCKS: The Ascent™
Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. (KJV: Psalms 61:1)
Finding the place of shelter and safety in marriage requires that we climb to God’s cleft. The marriage climb requires that we learn three lessons that are well understood to serious rock climbers:
- Focus on each step – one misstep can result in catastrophe
- Check the stability of your position before putting all of your weight there – be sensitive to your standing
- Moving forward often requires lateral and backward steps – progress is an art of negotiation
Marriage ROCKS: The Ascent™ is DFI’s flagship program which empowers engaged, married, and even separated couples to discover the untapped potential of their marriage by committing to five rocks which symbolize transformative principles of marriage. Marriage ROCKS: The Ascent™ uses biblical vignettes, psychological precepts, and cultural insights to assist couples (and singles interested in marriage) on a journey from self-centeredness to physical, emotional, and spiritual intimacy with each other. But, the heart of the Marriage ROCKS: The Ascent™ program is the discovery of authentic marriage centered upon purpose and ministry.
Three Keys to Understanding that Marriage ROCKS
- Your level of marital success in any area will never exceed your level of commitment to God in that area
- Enhancing your marriage requires that you turn each of the five rocks over to God alone before you can use that rock to slay those proverbial giants that seek to destroy your marriage
- Each rock represents a continuum along which you must find a more intimate relationship with God
Scripture tells us that we all fall short of the glory of God. As such, there is much room for improvement. And, you must come to understand your marriage as one of the tools that God uses to bring you into more intimate relationship with Him. The ascent to holiness and to marital bliss is one of the most challenging and rewarding journeys upon which you will ever embark.
